Getting More Fresh Stuff on Their Dinner Plate

We’ve always had a fairly balanced diet - the kids prefer pretty basic meals to casseroles or things that take hours of prep (thankfully).

However, our eldest, now 5.5 has become more fussy, and doesn’t want to eat the veggies put on his plate (by me).

Years ago, I remember my friend Nat telling me about the idea of putting a plate of veggies in the middle of the table and letting the kids choose them. So, in an attempt to give him some power in what he was choosing to eat, I’ve given it a go... and it works! It’s doubled the amount of fresh stuff he is eating for dinner and the others polish off the platter. Interestingly, my fussy eater is now eating more fresh veggies in his lunch box too.

It’s nothing new... but thought I’d share as it’s been a raging success in our house. The autonomy of using tongs themselves really appeals (while developing their fine motor skills) and the added option of dipping in hummus or taziki dip makes it even more of a hit!

Have a go!
